Modern vs. Contemporary
We have recently noticed an increase in the request for clean line, simple design. Many customers interchange the terms modern and contemporary and despite what many think… there is in fact a difference between these terms. Our goal is to educate and inform our client base, so we wanted to explain some of the differences that may be in fact, surprising to some. We wanted to share with you how to distinguish, how to decide, and why the confusion exists.
Both trends a 20th century marvel, they have very similar styles using clean lines, symmetry, and composition. Modern and contemporary designs are chic and elegant designs and at first glance they are easily mistakable as being one in the same.
Modernism came about at a time of social reform and change. It is a unique style that is very different from anything in the past. Great designers like Charles and Ray Eames, Mies van der Rohe, and Herman Miller have created modern masterpieces that are very recognizable. Customers often come in asking for some of these ever popular furniture styles and pieces. With these great designs, new materials, unique concepts, and creative design have been incorporated.
Contemporary design, on the other hand, refers to many different styles and is a much broader term. Contemporary design is more of a prevailing style during a certain period of time, in a certain part of the world. Referring to what the latest trends and styles are, it is not as classic and timeless as modern design.
Modern and contemporary designs can give any home a new, stylish look. Adding these designs to any traditional decor is always a great mix to enjoy the best of both too.
